Inviting you to reconnect to Nature and walk among Giants: Secure your exclusive stay along the Matumi Trail below

We have two separate, almost identical self-catering lodges, the Matumi and Mitzeeri Lodges, each uniquely designed as wooden cabins nestled in the heart of the rain forest. They invite you to fully immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of this ancient landscape. Just beyond your doorstep stand Amorentia’s ancient giants, five majestic Matumi trees, each estimated to be over 2,500 years old. Here too grows the oldest and largest true tree in South Africa, a Matumi. While Baobabs are often older and larger, they are not technically “trees” in the strict botanical sense but rather giant succulents, which makes Amorentia’s Matumi a rare living monument to resilience and time, waiting to be discovered along our trails.
These secluded log cabins are constructed from rough-cut pine planks repurposed from the 2002 Barnyard Theatre at Stanford Lake College, blending history with fine craftsmanship.
Nestled along the perennial Mabitsi River in a high-canopy rainforest, the lodges offer tranquility with the soothing river sounds and proximity to some of South Africa’s oldest Matumi trees, including “Lauren,” a 2,560-year-old giant.
Guests can explore the 2.2-kilometer Matumi Trail and the Clivia Trail for free, walking among over 10,000 Clivia plants and the country’s largest Matumi tree, estimated to be over 2,700 years old.
Crafted from repurposed rough-cut pine planks—once the bones of The Barnyard Theatre in 2002—these lodges hold stories in their walls and stillness in their design. Thoughtfully reimagined, each space invites you to return to what is natural, slow, and true.
Here, the Mabitsi River becomes your radio, its steady murmur a balm for the nervous system. Whether it trickles softly or roars with the rain, it calls you home to yourself.
Secluded and self-catering, these lodges offer the ultimate private retreat—a rare invitation to disconnect from the noise of the world and reconnect with your own rhythm. Fall asleep to the song of the river, and wake with the land. What you’ve been seeking lives here—in stillness, in sanctuary, in nature
Matumi Lodge rests beside a guardian of time—“Lauren,” one of the oldest Matumi trees in South Africa, standing gracefully at an estimated 2,560 years old. Her presence is a reminder of deep-rooted wisdom, patience, and the quiet endurance of nature.
Step onto the 2.2-kilometer Matumi Trail, a sacred path lined with over 10,000 blooming Clivia plants and dotted with five other grand Matumi elders. As you walk, the rhythm of your breath begins to match the pace of the earth beneath you.
At the trail’s heart, you’ll encounter the oldest and largest known Matumi tree in the country, estimated to be more than 2,700 years old. It is not just a tree—it is a living archive, a witness to centuries past. To stand before it is to feel your place in the greater web of life.
Let the trail guide you back into connection—with nature, with time, and with yourself.
The forest lodges are a peaceful retreat for families — comfortably sleeping four, or five with a gentle squeeze. Located just 23 km from Tzaneen, they sit at the end of a well-maintained 6 km dirt road, offering seclusion without the struggle.
Both Grootbosch Road and Amorentia Estate are clearly marked on Google Maps, making your journey here simple and scenic.
While staying in either of the two lodges, you’ll have full access — at no extra cost — to explore both the Clivia Trail (www.cliviatrail.co.za) and the Matumi Trail. These paths wind through ancient trees and blooming forest floors, offering quiet moments and soul-stirring views at every turn.
A short two-night weekend here is like a great inhale, reconnecting all who visit to Nature and to Self
